The new Silvertown Tunnel under the Thames will open on 7 April 2025, linking Silvertown in east London to the Greenwich Peninsula. The new tunnel will help to reduce congestion in and around the Blackwall Tunnel, help make peak time journeys faster and allow for better public transport links between both sides of the river.
From 7 April 2025, drivers will need to pay a charge to drive through Blackwall or Silvertown tunnel. This charge will help manage traffic levels across both tunnels, repay the build costs and go towards maintenance and operation of both tunnels.
Charges will apply for each crossing, in both directions, for both tunnels during charging hours. To help spread traffic levels more evenly and reduce congestion, a peak charge will apply during the busiest times (6:00 - 10:00 northbound and 16:00 - 19:00 southbound weekdays). An off-peak charge will apply at all other times and during the whole weekend, and will be available to customers registered with Auto Pay. There will be no charge to use the tunnels overnight from 22.00 to 06.00.
To support eligible local residents, sole traders, small businesses and charities, there will be a package of public transport concessions and charge discounts.
