Streetspace funding and guidance
TfL provided funding to allow London's boroughs to create new temporary protected cycle lanes, extend footways in town centres, school streets and measures to reduce through-traffic in residential areas. These measures were designed to make it easier and safer for people to walk, cycle and use public transport by providing alternatives to public transport when social distancing limited its safe capacity and preventing a car-led recovery.
The Streetspace for London guidance supported boroughs to identify and plan improvements to help people safely walk, cycle and use public transport during the coronavirus pandemic. We wanted to avoid people using their cars where possible, helping us reduce congestion, clean London's air and help people be healthier.
As part of our funding settlements we have received from Government during the pandemic, funds were set aside to invest in healthy streets schemes.
This programme saw the delivery of 101km trial cycle lanes, 89 Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, 322 'School Streets' as well as 84km of TLRN bus lanes converted to operate 24/7 Monday to Sunday. For the past 18 months, TfL and boroughs have been reviewing and evaluating the schemes that were delivered through Streetspace for London, based on monitoring data and stakeholder feedback. Some schemes have since transitioned to experimental or permanent, and some have been removed from site.
Advice on how these schemes should be planned and delivered was provided in the guidance below, which includes information about scheme types funded by Streetspace, such as Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, strategic cycle routes and School Streets, as well as guidance on complementary measures such as cycle parking.
