Hammersmith Bridge
The Council's work is designed to make the bridge safe and allow its continued use by pedestrians and cyclists. This work is ongoing.
While the work is going on, people cycling and riding electric scooters must dismount and walk across the bridge.
The closure and re-opening of Hammersmith Bridge
The bridge closed to motor traffic in 2019 and to all traffic in 2020 because of concerns about cracking in the infrastructure.
The Council reopened the bridge to foot, cycle and river traffic in July 2021 after safety engineers advised it was safe to do so. This followed detailed investigations and the addition of a temperature control system.
Several bus services use alternative routes to cross the river. For the latest service information and to plan your journey please visit Journey Planner or TfL Go.
Fixing the bridge - next steps
We're supporting the Council to find a way to fully reopen Hammersmith Bridge to traffic as soon as possible. The bridge is an important transport link and reinstating bus links across the river is our priority.
In the current phase of stabilization works, the Council is making good progress:
- Bridge pedestals have been strengthened to reduce the risk of further structural problems
- A long-term plan for strengthening the bridge is in development, with the goal of reopening it to motor vehicles, including buses
